Yin Yoga is one of the most modern yoga styles. It works deeply into our body with passive, longer-held poses, targeting the deepest tissues of the body, our connective tissues – ligaments, joints, bones, and the deep fascia networks of the body – rather than the muscles (which are the physical focus of Yang yoga practices). Energetically, Yin yoga improves the energy flow, enhancing the flow of chi (energy, in Traditional Chinese Medicine) in the organs. It offers emotional and mental health benefits, such as increasing circulation and improving flexibility; calming and balancing the mind and body; reducing stress and anxiety; releasing fascia; encouraging deeper relaxation; improving joint mobility; balancing the organs through meridian stimulation. In my Yin Yoga sessions, we start with a small guided meditation to bring ourselves to the present moment, followed by pranayama (breathing exercise) to calm down our breath and our mind to the practice and then the asanas (poses) sequence. During the sequence, we go through a series of movements that can even be customized as per clients’ needs/desires of the specific moment or following a practice routine developed for that day. Different from other yoga styles, in Yin, we hold the poses for a longer period (at least 3min), passive floor poses that mainly work the lower part of the body – the hips, pelvis, inner thighs, lower spine (areas rich in connective tissues). For this long-held series, we work with four main principles of Yin Yoga: find an appropriate edge of the pose, find stillness in the pose, hold the pose and come out of the pose gently and slowly. After one pose, we always release the body and offer a counterpose and finish the session with the full body and final relaxation in savanasa. Yin Yoga is great for beginners and more experienced yogis. So, if you practice would like to practice meditation and mindfulness differently, want to find complete relaxation and at the same time discover the edges of your body, balance your body energy, these slower, long holds, more grounded and mindful sessions are ideal for you! Flow with me!"
